'Jambo' - Swahili for G'day.
Our names are Stopper, Reviver and Survivor.
We are African plains zebras or equus quagga.
We were created in fibreglass by Canberra sculptor Alan Aston and painted from actual photographs of our brothers and sisters by artist Julie Aston.
The zebra on the right looking out for us is named Dasher in honour of WO (Dasher) Wheatley VC.
Question: Are we white with black stripes or black with white stripes? Hint: Our skin is black.
Thank you for stopping and please ENJOY.

Hey. These zebras are spookily real! How did they get though customs/quarantine??
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see someone sharing their skills and creativity with the community, just for the fun of it. Thanks Alan, this is a great installation.
When will the flamigos fly in?? Do they visit in Summer perhaps?
Well you guys had me when I drove past this morning. They're incredibly life like. Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteWe have been swearing that we will stop every week, and now I hear they are being moved! Will definitely leave early to stop in and see them - what a shame they couldn't be permanent, this is the first sculpture I have loved in years!
ReplyDeletePlease don't remove them before lunch tomorrow, or my children will be upset!!
G-Day Alan, I'm the Driver Reviver coordinator for the Mundoonan Driver Reviver sits (2) on the Hume Highway between Yass and Gunning. I would be more than happy if your Zebras could be herded to sit over the December / Januray period of our opertion. Our sites are controlled by the RTA and we operate in 2 very large rest areas one on the north bound lanes and the other on the south bound lanes. Please contact me for more details.

hey Alan and Julie
ReplyDeleteChris and I just saw the zebras and we thought they looked fantastic!! What an awful shame people destroyed them. Some people just have no brains and no imagination. l have always thought Lake George was such a mysterious ominous place and having the zebras juxtaposed on that landscape looked eerily amazing.
i hope the repairs go well and we see them basking with the whales on Lake Burley Griffin. Canberra has always needed a bit of livening up!
I loved the surprise given by the beautiful zebras as we drove to Canberra. I thought that a couple of giraffes in the distance would have added to the scene. Damn the vandals and the meanness of their spirits. I hope the zebras live for a long time in a place to bring surprise and delight to many.
